Evidence-Based Curriculum

Structured prevention curricula, delivered by trained SLS staff and aligned with Michigan Department of Education standards.

Programs we deliver

SLS delivers nationally recognized, research-backed programs to students, parents, and families — all fully aligned with Michigan Department of Education standards.

Botvin LifeSkills Training

Botvin LifeSkills Training

Elementary, middle & high school · 8–18 sessions

Botvin LifeSkills Training is a nationally recognized, research-backed curriculum that targets the core reasons students engage in risky behaviors. It promotes healthy alternatives to substance use, builds emotional resilience, and strengthens decision-making skills.

SLS embeds Botvin within a student-led framework — real-world application through student voice, deeper reflection on self-esteem and social pressure, and a culture of empathy and inclusion that reinforces every skill taught.

Prime For Life

Prime For Life

Students & adults ages 13+ · 8 hours, flexible

Prime For Life is an evidence-based alcohol and drug education program that challenges the beliefs and attitudes contributing to high-risk substance use. It provides a judgment-free way of understanding how alcohol- and drug-related problems develop, how to prevent them, and when help is needed.

Guiding Good Choices

Guiding Good Choices

Parents of children grades 4–8 · Five 2-hour sessions

Guiding Good Choices strengthens family bonds and reduces the risk factors associated with teenage drug use. Parents learn how to prevent drug use, set clear family guidelines, manage family conflict, and build a parent support network. Pairs well with whole-child programming at the upper elementary and middle school level.

Strengthening Families

Strengthening Families

Parents/caregivers & youth ages 10–14 · Seven 2.5-hour sessions

An evidence-based, nationally recognized program designed to help families increase protective factors and reduce the risk factors that lead to both substance abuse and youth depression. Families work together to learn and practice skills that support healthy relationships and effective parenting, with sessions on stress management and peer pressure. Pairs well with school, church, or community family programming.

Workshops for parents and caregivers

Parents and caregivers are a child’s first and most important teacher. Alongside the nationally recognized family curricula above, SLS runs its own interactive parent workshops — built to be hands-on, not a lecture. Our programs and trainings are evaluated by the High/Scope Educational Research Foundation, internationally known experts in youth development, and SLS was listed on SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices.

Open Door Policy

Middle school students & their parents · Interactive workshop

Sometimes parents need help opening the door to communication on tough topics with their children. Open Door Policy focuses on communication skills within a family, identifying the pressures and stressors that can lead to self-harming behavior, and techniques for saying ‘no’ in uncomfortable situations. The workshop is interactive, using group processing and role plays.

Health, safety and parenting education workshop

Health, Safety, Drug & Parenting Education: Need-Based Topics

Parents & caregivers · Length set by learning goals

Parenting is hard — we can help make it easier. We offer a wide range of health and safety workshops and can design one around your group’s specific needs. Topics include drug education and awareness, safe driving, alcohol, tobacco, setting boundaries and rules, talking about difficult subjects, creating a validating environment, and helping your child through loss and disappointment.
